BASF Eco-Efficiency

The BASF Eco-Efficiency label is a product-level sustainability credential awarded to products that have undergone a rigorous Eco-Efficiency Analysis developed by BASF SE. The methodology evaluates both the environmental and economic dimensions of a product across its full lifecycle, and is certified by two internationally recognized bodies: TÜV Rheinland in Germany and NSF International in the United States. It is best suited for manufacturers in industries such as construction, chemicals, automotive, agriculture, and coatings who want a credible, data-backed way to compare the sustainability performance of their products.

To earn the label, a completed Eco-Efficiency Analysis must pass an independent third-party peer review, ensuring the results are objective and scientifically sound. Findings are published publicly online, which supports transparency with customers, procurement teams, and other stakeholders. The label is valid for three years, after which a revised analysis is required to reflect changes in market conditions and product alternatives.

For product teams and their customers, the label provides a defensible sustainability claim that can be used in marketing materials and green procurement decisions. It is particularly valuable when a manufacturer needs to demonstrate that their product performs better — environmentally and economically — than competing alternatives, with the backing of a certified and independently reviewed methodology.
