Bay Area Green Business

The Bay Area Green Business Program is a free, government-backed certification for small and medium-sized businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area that want to demonstrate a verified commitment to environmental responsibility. Administered by the Association of Bay Area Governments in partnership with local environmental agencies and utilities, the program has recognized businesses across all nine Bay Area counties since 1996. It is a strong fit for businesses in hospitality, food service, retail, and office settings that want a credible local credential without the complexity or cost of national certification programs.

To become certified, businesses must meet verified standards across energy conservation, water use, waste reduction, pollution prevention, and carbon footprint reduction. Assessments are conducted by partner agencies rather than being self-reported, which adds credibility to the certification. Participating businesses also receive access to technical assistance and incentives from those same partner agencies and utilities throughout the process.

Certified businesses earn the right to display the Bay Area Green Business seal in their marketing materials and are listed in a public directory of certified businesses. The certification is recognized region-wide and carries nearly three decades of established credibility, making it a practical way for local businesses to signal genuine environmental leadership to customers and the community.
