EDGE Auditors / Certifiers

1. Earn the EDGE Expert credential first. The EDGE Auditor/Certifier training requires prior EDGE Expert certification as a prerequisite — complete that program through the EDGE Buildings platform before applying.\n2. Confirm eligibility and regional licensing body. Identify the licensed EDGE certifier or regional body (e.g., GBCSA for Africa) running the next auditor training cohort, as training is delivered by licensed organizations, not directly by IFC/GBCI.\n3. Register for the online webinar training. Enroll in the EDGE Auditor Training: Online Webinar through the EDGE Buildings events page (edgebuildings.com/events). Sessions are scheduled periodically and seats are limited.\n4. Complete the webinar training. Attend the instructor-led online sessions covering the full EDGE audit process, documentation review, energy/water/materials calculations verification, and certification procedures.\n5. Complete a supervised or sample audit. Following the webinar, demonstrate practical competency by conducting a supervised audit or submitting sample audit documentation for review by the training provider.\n6. Receive auditor status and registry listing. Upon successful assessment, GBCI lists you in the official EDGE Auditor registry, enabling you to independently audit and certify EDGE projects globally.\n7. Maintain active status. Conduct EDGE audits regularly and complete any required refresher training when EDGE standards are updated to retain your auditor credentials.

The EDGE Auditor training and assessment evaluates candidates across the full scope of the EDGE audit process. Candidates must demonstrate mastery of the EDGE software tool, including the ability to verify energy efficiency calculations (targeting a minimum 20% improvement over baseline), water efficiency calculations (also 20% minimum), and embodied energy in materials (20% minimum). These three pillars — energy, water, and materials — form the core of every EDGE audit.\n\nCandidates are assessed on their ability to review and validate project documentation submitted by EDGE Expert applicants, including architectural drawings, specifications, product data sheets, and utility calculations. They must identify non-compliant submissions, request corrective documentation, and make certification decisions in accordance with EDGE standards.\n\nThe practical assessment also covers understanding of EDGE's tiered certification levels (EDGE Certified and EDGE Zero Carbon), regional baseline assumptions built into the EDGE software, and the procedural requirements for issuing, suspending, or revoking EDGE certificates. Familiarity with GBCI's certification management platform and audit reporting requirements is also evaluated.

Developed by IFC (a World Bank Group member) and administered by GBCI, EDGE has certified projects in over 170 countries, with particularly strong adoption across Sub-Saharan Africa, South and Southeast Asia, and Latin America. The EDGE Auditor credential is the professional pathway that enables this global certification ecosystem to function.\n\nThe pool of certified EDGE Auditors remains relatively small compared to LEED APs or BREEAM Assessors, reflecting both the program's younger age (launched 2014) and its more specialized focus.
