Identify the applicable referential: Determine which of the four Effinature referentials applies to your project — NCO 25.05 (new construction), EVO 25.05 (renovation of existing buildings), HOR 25.05 (urban planning/land development), or HVE (long-term ecological performance maintenance for already-certified projects).

1. Submit your certification application: Describe your operation, key contacts, and the target referential through the online platform. The application process takes only a few minutes.

1. Recevability review and contract signing: IRICE reviews the application for eligibility and proposes a certification contract, which is signed electronically online.

1. Engage a Biodiversity Partner (recommended): Consider working with a qualified Biodiversity Partner — an ecologist or environmental consultancy qualified by IRICE — to guide your project through the 110+ biodiversity criteria. The network is publicly searchable on the IRICE website.

1. Evaluation by a designated assessor: IRICE assigns a qualified evaluator who follows the project throughout design and construction phases. For NCO (new construction), there are two distinct evaluation phases: Conception and Réalisation.

1. Documentation and audit: Compile evidence across the four assessment phases (organizational approach, design, realization, ongoing management). The assessor conducts documentary review and field verification against the public reference framework.

1. Certification decision and publication: Upon successful audit, the certified operation is published in IRICE's public online directory and the project receives the Effinature certification mark.

Effinature evaluates projects against more than 110 biodiversity criteria organized across four structured referentials and four assessment phases. The referentials are: NCO 25.05 (new construction — residential, office, mixed-use), EVO 25.05 (renovation of existing buildings), HOR 25.05 (land development — ZAC, subdivisions, public spaces, roads), and HVE (Haute Valeur Écologique — ongoing ecological performance monitoring for previously certified projects).

The four assessment phases applied across referentials are: (1) Organizational Approach — the project owner's governance, biodiversity policy, and commitment to ecological integration; (2) Design — how biodiversity considerations are embedded in architectural and landscape design, including preservation of existing natural heritage, ecological connectivity, and species-friendly design choices; (3) Realization — on-site construction practices, management of ecological impacts during works, and verification that design intentions are implemented; and (4) Ongoing Management — long-term stewardship of green and natural spaces, maintenance protocols, and ecological monitoring.

Each control point is measurable and traceable, with criteria covering the ecological value of the site, preservation of existing biodiversity, reduction of negative impacts on local fauna and flora, and the quality of long-term management plans. The HVE referential adds recurring conformity checks to verify that ecological performance is maintained over time after initial certification. All criteria are publicly available in IRICE's reference framework documents.

Effinature occupies a specialized niche in the French and European green building certification landscape, focusing exclusively on biodiversity — a domain that most mainstream certifications (BREEAM, HQE, LEED) address only partially through ecology sub-categories. With 200+ projects currently in progress according to IRICE's own data, it remains a relatively small program compared to HQE (tens of thousands of certified projects) or BREEAM, but its specificity gives it a distinct positioning as biodiversity moves from a secondary ESG consideration to a regulatory priority.

The program's relevance is growing rapidly due to several converging regulatory and market forces in Europe. The EU Taxonomy Regulation's environmental objectives now explicitly include biodiversity and ecosystems (Objective 6), and the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) requires large companies to report against ESRS E4 (Biodiversity and Ecosystems). IRICE has positioned Effinature and its companion BPS diagnostic tool directly against these requirements, making the certification increasingly attractive to institutional real estate investors and asset managers who need defensible, third-party-verified biodiversity data for regulatory disclosures.

Geographically, Effinature is primarily recognized in France, with some presence in neighboring European countries (Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark are listed in the program's geographic scope). Its COFRAC accreditation under ISO/IEC 17065 gives it regulatory credibility within the French market that self-declared labels lack. The main competitive alternatives — BiodiverCity Label, HQE Biodiversité, and BREEAM's ecology credits — each have different strengths, but none combine COFRAC-accredited third-party certification with a dedicated biodiversity-only framework covering the full project lifecycle. Demand is expected to grow as French and EU biodiversity regulations tighten through 2025–2030.

Effinature was created in 2009 under the initiative that would become IRICE (Institut de Référence pour l'Ingénierie de la Cohérence Écologique), responding to a gap in the French construction certification landscape: while energy performance was increasingly regulated and certified, biodiversity impacts of real estate development had no equivalent rigorous, third-party-verified framework. The program was developed in collaboration with ecologists, urban planners, and construction professionals to create measurable, traceable criteria applicable across the full project lifecycle.

IRICE was formally incorporated as a legal entity on February 9, 2018, consolidating the certification activities under a dedicated independent certification body. The organization subsequently obtained COFRAC accreditation (n°5-0655) under ISO/IEC 17065 — the international standard for product, process, and service certification bodies — giving Effinature a level of regulatory standing that distinguishes it from private labels. A significant milestone was the development of the four-referential structure (NCO, EVO, HOR, HVE) to cover the full spectrum of real estate operations, and the launch of the Biodiversity Performance Score (BPS) diagnostic tool as a complementary upstream instrument. The program gained further relevance with the introduction of EU CSRD/ESRS E4 and EU Taxonomy biodiversity requirements, which created institutional demand for exactly the kind of measurable, audited biodiversity data Effinature produces. Training for Biodiversity Partners is delivered through Qualitel Formation (a Qualiopi-certified training organization), reflecting a deliberate ecosystem-building strategy to grow qualified practitioners alongside the certification program.
