EU Energy Label

The EU Energy Label is a mandatory certification and labelling scheme established by the European Commission that requires energy efficiency information to be clearly displayed on a wide range of household appliances and products sold, hired, or offered for hire-purchase within the European Union. Covered products include refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers, dishwashers, ovens, water heaters, lighting sources, and air-conditioning appliances — regardless of whether they are ultimately intended for household or commercial use.

Products are rated on a standardised scale, typically from 'A' (most efficient) to 'G' (least efficient), giving consumers a straightforward way to compare the energy consumption of competing products. Suppliers are legally required to provide both a label and a product information sheet (fiche) containing accurate consumption data, and must maintain technical documentation sufficient to verify the accuracy of that information. The European Product Registry for Energy Labelling (EPREL) serves as the central database where labelled products are registered and can be publicly consulted.

This program is relevant for manufacturers, suppliers, importers, and retailers involved in the production or sale of energy-using products who need to understand their legal obligations under EU energy labelling law. While the scheme is an EU regulation, its relevance extends to any business seeking to export applicable products into the European market, including those operating from outside the EU such as in South Africa.
