Overview
The Greener Product Certification Seal is a third-party certification for building products that have been evaluated against major green building standards, including LEED, LEED for Homes, and the NAHB Green Building Standard. It is designed for manufacturers in the construction industry who want to demonstrate that their products meet recognized environmental criteria and are eligible for use in certified green building projects in the United States.
Products are assessed across 24 building product categories using seven environmental qualifiers: energy conservation and renewable energy, regionally produced materials, indoor air quality, certified wood, recycled content, and reused and renewable materials. The evaluation takes a lifecycle approach, considering environmental impacts from raw material extraction through manufacturing, use, and disposal. Environmental claims must be supported by third-party certification documentation or laboratory test results.
To pursue certification, manufacturers submit an application along with supporting documentation. Products that meet the applicable standards are awarded the Seal and listed in a searchable directory on the Greener Product website, making it easier for architects, builders, and project teams working on USGBC or NAHB certified projects to identify compliant materials.
