Passivhaus

Passivhaus (Passive House) is a rigorous building certification standard developed by the Passive House Institute (PHI) in Germany. It sets precise performance requirements for energy use, airtightness, and thermal comfort, and is recognized across more than 20 countries including Germany, the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and much of Europe and Asia. The standard applies to residential and commercial buildings alike, and certification is pursued by architects, developers, and builders who want to demonstrate that a structure meets one of the most demanding energy efficiency benchmarks in the world.

To achieve Passivhaus certification, a building must meet strict criteria across several areas: a highly insulated and airtight building envelope, elimination of thermal bridges, high-performance windows, and a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery to maintain fresh air quality without significant energy loss. Heating and cooling demand is kept extremely low — primarily through passive means such as solar orientation, internal heat gains from occupants and appliances, and the heat recovery system — rather than relying on conventional heating or cooling equipment.

The result is a building that can use up to 90% less energy for space heating than a conventional structure, while also delivering consistently high indoor air quality and thermal comfort. Passivhaus is relevant for anyone involved in the design, construction, or commissioning of new buildings or deep retrofits who wants an internationally credible, performance-based certification rather than a prescriptive one.
