SCS Sustainable Choice

SCS Sustainable Choice is a third-party certification program for carpet products, administered by SCS Global Services. It verifies that carpet manufacturers meet measurable standards for environmental performance and social responsibility, using the NSF/ANSI 140 Sustainable Carpet Assessment Standard as its foundation. The program is designed to support continuous improvement rather than a single pass/fail outcome.

Certification is awarded at three levels — Silver, Gold, and Platinum — based on points earned across five requirement areas. Higher point totals correspond to higher certification tiers, allowing manufacturers to benchmark their current performance and work toward more rigorous standards over time.

The program is primarily relevant to carpet manufacturers operating in the United States and to construction or building professionals who need to document the sustainability credentials of their material choices. Products certified under Sustainable Choice can contribute to credits within the LEED green building rating systems, making the certification practically useful for projects pursuing LEED recognition.
