SMaRT Consensus Sustainable Product Standards

SMaRT (Sustainable Materials Rating Technology) is a comprehensive product certification standard developed by Market Transformation to Sustainability. It applies to a wide range of product categories including building materials, flooring, fabrics, apparel, and textiles, and is designed to evaluate products against environmental, social, and economic sustainability criteria. The standard is ISO-compliant, incorporates lifecycle assessment (LCA) methodology, and consolidates over 40 single-attribute standards into one unified framework.

Certification is tiered, beginning at an entry level requiring 28 points and scaling up to a Platinum level with a maximum of 156 achievable points, including 15 mandatory prerequisite points. This structure allows manufacturers at different stages of sustainability maturity to pursue certification and work toward continuous improvement. SMaRT is recognized by the LEED Green Building Standard, making it relevant for manufacturers whose products are used in green building projects.

SMaRT is the result of over 17 years of consensus-based standardization, developed through six rounds of national voting involving thousands of industry professionals. It has been adopted by 20 leading organizations, including the US Green Building Council and 11 Fortune 500 companies. The standard is applicable across a broad range of industries — from construction and manufacturing to agriculture and technology — and is recognized in markets across North America, Europe, and the Asia-Pacific region.
