Overview
UL Environmental Claim Validation (ECV) is a third-party verification service offered by UL Environment that confirms the accuracy of environmental claims manufacturers make on their products, packaging, and marketing materials. Rather than certifying a product as broadly "green," ECV focuses on specific, testable claims — such as recycled content, rapidly renewable materials, VOC content, recyclability, regional sourcing, mold resistance, landfill waste diversion, and energy-saving performance. Manufacturers submit their products for independent testing and review, and if the claims hold up, UL validates them and authorizes use of the Environmental Claims Validated logo.
This program is designed for manufacturers in construction, technology, energy, and related industries who want credible, third-party backing for the sustainability attributes they already promote. It is particularly relevant for companies selling into the U.S. market where buyers, specifiers, and green building programs increasingly require documented proof behind environmental marketing language. The validation is specific to the claim being made, so manufacturers can pursue validation for one claim or several, depending on what they need to substantiate.
Once validated, product details are listed in UL Environment's publicly accessible Database of Validated and Certified Products, making it easier for procurement teams, architects, and sustainability managers to find and verify compliant products by category, company, or claim type. For manufacturers, this visibility can support green building certifications, retailer sustainability requirements, and broader ESG disclosure efforts.
