BASTA

BASTA is a Swedish certification system designed to phase out hazardous substances from construction and building products. Suppliers submit their products for assessment against scientifically based chemical criteria, and must declare the product's full chemical composition, provide supporting documentation, and demonstrate competence in environmental and health assessment. Products that pass are listed in a publicly searchable database, giving them visibility among the procurement professionals, architects, and project managers who use the system.

Registered products receive one of two ratings: BASTA, for products meeting the more comprehensive requirements, or BETA, for those meeting a baseline standard. The open database is accessible to over 500 connected companies across Sweden, and an open API allows integration with existing procurement and design tools. BASTA also offers a logbook service to support traceability and circular economy goals.

The program is run as a non-profit jointly owned by the IVL Swedish Environmental Research Institute and the Swedish Construction Federation. It is developed specifically for the Swedish market, and the database is available in Swedish. BASTA is best suited for manufacturers and suppliers who want to demonstrate verified compliance with hazardous substance criteria, as well as procurement and design professionals who need reliable chemical safety data when selecting construction products.
