Byggvarubedömningen

Byggvarubedömningen (BVB) is a Swedish building materials assessment system that evaluates the environmental and health performance of construction products across their full lifecycle. Products are scored across seven factors — including chemical content, raw material sourcing, construction and management phases, demolition, waste, and indoor environment — and assigned one of three ratings: Recommended, Accepted, or To Be Avoided. The result is a standardized product card that can be used directly in procurement documentation and project records.

BVB is operated as a non-profit cooperative, meaning its criteria are developed and maintained by the industry itself rather than by a commercial entity. The system is widely adopted across Sweden, and member organizations — including property owners, contractors, architects, and facility managers — commit to using only assessed and approved materials in their projects. An online database makes it straightforward to search, compare, and document assessed products.

The program is relevant for two main audiences. Building material manufacturers and suppliers use BVB to formally document the sustainability profile of their products and gain visibility in the Swedish market. Property owners, developers, and construction professionals use it to simplify sustainable material selection, meet procurement requirements, and maintain traceable project documentation. A digital logbook tool further supports project-level collaboration and material tracking across teams.
