Bird Friendly Coffee

Bird Friendly Coffee is a certification program run by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center that verifies coffee has been grown under shade conditions that genuinely support migratory bird habitats. To earn the label, farms must meet science-based shade criteria developed from Smithsonian ornithological field research, covering factors like canopy height, foliage density, and tree diversity. Certification is conducted through independent third-party inspection, and only farms that already hold USDA organic certification are eligible to apply.

This program is best suited for coffee farms, cooperatives, and roasters in shade-grown coffee regions — primarily across Latin America — that want to add a credible, wildlife-focused credential to their existing organic certification. Because the Smithsonian's involvement lends strong scientific authority, and because the dual organic-plus-Bird-Friendly requirement sets a high bar, the label carries meaningful weight in specialty and ethical coffee markets.

Certified producers earn the right to display the Bird Friendly seal on packaging and marketing materials, which can support premium pricing and differentiation.
