ECO certification

ECO Certification is an ecolabel administered by the Malta Tourism Authority for hotels, guesthouses, and other tourist accommodations across the Maltese Islands. The program endorses internationally recognized sustainability frameworks — including the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) criteria, Green Key, and the EU Ecolabel — to help properties demonstrate genuine commitment to environmental, socioeconomic, and cultural sustainability.

To achieve certification, accommodations must meet criteria across a broad range of sustainability areas, including environmental management, waste reduction, sustainable procurement, energy and water efficiency, air quality, noise control, building and green space management, and respect for local culture. Meeting these standards signals to guests that a property actively works to reduce its environmental footprint and foster responsible tourism practices.

The program is relevant for any hotel or accommodation operator in Malta looking to formalize and validate their sustainability efforts. Certified properties gain recognition through an official ecolabel and become part of a directory of eco-certified hotels promoted to travelers.
