1. Complete the self-assessment: Log into the professional online portal at ecolabel.lu and conduct a self-evaluation of your establishment against the 60+ EcoLabel Luxembourg criteria covering energy, water, waste, purchasing, and environmental management.

1. Receive individualized advisory support: Work with your assigned IMS Luxembourg consultant at no cost to identify gaps, implement improvements, and prepare your application dossier. This support is free and ongoing.

1. Decide on single or dual pathway: Determine whether you wish to pursue only the national EcoLabel Lux, or simultaneously apply for the EU Ecolabel for Tourist Accommodation — both can be pursued in parallel.

1. Undergo the independent external audit: Submit your establishment to a third-party auditor who will conduct an on-site inspection and verify compliance with all applicable criteria. For the EU Ecolabel pathway, your completed dossier is also submitted to the Administration de l'environnement for an additional site visit.

1. Receive the label at the official ceremony: If the audit confirms compliance, your establishment is awarded the EcoLabel Lux seal (and/or EU Ecolabel certificate) at an official ceremony. The label is valid for three years.

1. Maintain and renew: Continue implementing your environmental measures and prepare for re-audit every three years. Your IMS Luxembourg advisor remains available for ongoing support throughout the certification period.

EcoLabel Luxembourg evaluates tourist accommodations against more than 60 individual environmental criteria organized across five core categories. Energy Management examines energy consumption patterns, use of renewable energy sources, efficiency of heating and cooling systems, lighting (LED adoption, motion sensors), and measures to reduce energy use in guest rooms and common areas.

Water Management evaluates water consumption per guest-night, presence of water-saving devices (low-flow showerheads, dual-flush toilets), irrigation practices, and monitoring systems for detecting leaks or overconsumption.

Waste Reduction looks at waste sorting and recycling infrastructure, reduction of single-use plastics, composting of food waste, and guest-facing initiatives to minimize waste generation during stays.

Sustainable Purchasing assesses the proportion of organic, fair-trade, and locally sourced food and beverage products offered, use of eco-certified cleaning products, and procurement policies that favor environmentally responsible suppliers.

Additional criteria may cover support for low-carbon guest transport (public transit information, bicycle hire, EV charging), use of green spaces, and biodiversity-friendly landscaping. The EU Ecolabel pathway applies the harmonized EU criteria for tourist accommodation services, which broadly align with the national criteria but are governed by EU regulation.

EcoLabel Luxembourg is a niche, nationally scoped certification with approximately 37 certified establishments — a modest but meaningful number given Luxembourg's relatively small tourism sector.
