1. Assess your starting point: Review your organisation's current environmental practices and identify which Enviro-Mark® level (Bronze through Diamond) is the most appropriate entry point. Most organisations without a formal EMS begin at Bronze.\n\n2. Understand the requirements: Review the standard for your target level. Bronze focuses on regulatory compliance; Silver adds environmental aspects identification and a formal policy; Gold introduces improvement targets and monitoring; Platinum requires operational procedures; Diamond adds an internal audit programme.\n\n4. Develop your documentation: Build or update your environmental management system documentation to meet the requirements of your target level. This includes policies, registers of environmental aspects and impacts, procedures, monitoring records, and (for Diamond) internal audit records.\n\n5. Implement and gather evidence: Put your EMS into practice and collect evidence of implementation — records, monitoring data, staff communications, and improvement actions — over a sufficient period to demonstrate conformity.\n\n6. Engage a third-party auditor: Enviro-Mark Solutions will arrange an independent auditor to review your documentation and evidence against the relevant level standard.\n\n7. Undergo the audit: The auditor assesses your documentation and may conduct a site visit or interview. Non-conformances identified must be addressed before certification is granted.\n\n8. Receive certification and plan your next level: Upon successful audit, your organisation receives the Enviro-Mark® certificate and logo for the relevant level. Enviro-Mark® assesses organisations across five progressive levels, each building on the requirements of the previous one. The assessment is documentation- and evidence-based, conducted by an independent third-party auditor.

Bronze evaluates whether the organisation has identified and complied with all relevant environmental legislation and regulations. This is the foundation level, focused on legal compliance and basic environmental awareness.

Silver adds requirements for a formal environmental policy signed by senior management, and a documented register of the organisation's significant environmental aspects and impacts — the activities, products, or services that interact with the environment.

Gold introduces measurable environmental objectives and targets, along with monitoring and measurement systems to track progress. Organisations must demonstrate a commitment to continuous improvement with documented evidence of performance against targets.

Platinum requires documented operational procedures and controls for managing significant environmental impacts. This level ensures that environmental management is embedded into day-to-day operations, not just policy documents.

Diamond — the highest level — adds a formal internal audit programme, whereby the organisation systematically reviews its own EMS for conformity and effectiveness. At this level, the organisation's EMS is fully aligned with the structure and requirements of ISO 14001, and the organisation is considered ready to pursue ISO 14001 certification from an accredited certification body.

Enviro-Mark® occupies a well-established niche in the New Zealand environmental management certification landscape. Launched in 2001, it was one of the first structured EMS stepping-stone programmes in the country and has been adopted by hundreds of New Zealand organisations across sectors including local government, manufacturing, construction, and professional services. Its tiered structure made ISO 14001 accessible to small and medium-sized enterprises that lacked the resources or maturity to pursue full ISO 14001 certification directly.

The programme is operated by Enviro-Mark Solutions, which is part of the Landcare Research group (now Manaaki Whenua), giving it credibility within the New Zealand science and sustainability community. However, the programme competes increasingly with Toitū Envirocare's suite of certifications — particularly Toitū enviromark diamond, which is effectively the same programme rebranded under the Toitū umbrella following Landcare Research's consolidation of its sustainability services. Organisations seeking carbon-specific recognition may also look to Toitū carbonreduce or carbonzero. Internationally, ISO 14001 remains the gold standard for EMS certification, and EcoVadis is gaining traction for supply chain sustainability assessments.

Demand for environmental management certification in New Zealand has grown steadily, driven by government procurement requirements, supply chain due diligence expectations, and increasing stakeholder scrutiny of environmental performance. Enviro-Mark® (and its Toitū successor) remains a respected and practical choice for New Zealand organisations, particularly those in the early to mid stages of their EMS journey. Its primary limitation is geographic — it carries little recognition outside New Zealand and Australia.

Enviro-Mark® was established in 2001 by Landcare Research, a New Zealand Crown Research Institute (now known as Manaaki Whenua – Landcare Research), in response to demand from New Zealand businesses for a practical, accessible pathway to environmental management certification. The programme was adapted from the UK's Enviro-Mark specification and localised for the New Zealand regulatory and business environment. It was designed to address a gap in the market: ISO 14001 was widely recognised as the international standard for environmental management systems, but many small and medium-sized organisations found it too complex or resource-intensive to pursue directly.

Over the following two decades, Enviro-Mark® grew to become one of New Zealand's most recognised EMS certification programmes, with hundreds of organisations certified across the five-level pathway. Landcare Research subsequently established Enviro-Mark Solutions as the operational entity managing the programme, and later developed the Toitū Envirocare brand to consolidate its suite of sustainability certifications — including Enviro-Mark® — under a unified identity. The programme's core five-level structure (Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond) has remained consistent since its inception, reflecting its enduring relevance as a stepping stone to ISO 14001.
