Green Dot / Der Grüner Punkt / Grønt Punkt

The Green Dot (Grüner Punkt) is a symbol that appears on consumer product packaging to indicate that the producer has licensed their packaging through an industry-funded take-back and recycling system. Originally established under the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (94/62/EC), the program is operated by Duales System Deutschland GmbH and is one of the most established packaging compliance schemes in the world.

Producers who sell packaged goods are often legally required to participate in a recognized recycling system and contribute financially to the collection and recovery of packaging waste. By licensing with Green Dot, companies fulfill this obligation and fund the infrastructure that sorts and recycles packaging materials such as plastics, paper, glass, and metals.

It is important to note that the Green Dot symbol does not make any claims about the environmental properties of the product itself, nor does it mean the packaging is made from recycled materials. It solely indicates that the producer is a registered participant in an approved packaging recovery system. This distinction matters for consumers and businesses evaluating the environmental credentials of a product versus its packaging compliance status.
