Legambiente Turismo

Legambiente Turismo is an Italian eco-tourism certification program open to any type of tourist accommodation business, from hotels and B&Bs to campsites and rural stays. Operating since 1997, it is run by Legambiente, one of Italy's largest environmental organizations, and is designed to help hospitality businesses reduce their environmental impact while maintaining high standards of guest comfort and quality.

The certification is built around a Decalogue of environmental objectives, covering areas such as waste reduction and recycling, water and energy conservation, sustainable mobility, the promotion of local and healthy food, and the preservation of natural and cultural heritage. Criteria are developed in consultation with local stakeholders, and businesses typically join as part of destination-based groups under a local agreement, supported by business associations, tourist boards, and local authorities such as municipalities and parks. This collective approach helps ensure that the sustainability measures are embedded in the broader destination, not just within individual properties.

To maintain credibility, Legambiente Turismo conducts standard monitoring and annual on-site auditing of participating businesses, operating under the Visit Common Basic Standards framework. The program is well suited for Italian accommodation providers that want a structured, independently verified pathway to improving their environmental performance and communicating that commitment to environmentally conscious travelers.
