Certify renewable electricity supply and consumption with verified, tradeable green certificates

Overview
The RECS International Quality Standard — known as the "RECS Good Practice" label — is a certification framework for renewable electricity operating across key European energy markets including Austria, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and Switzerland. It certifies electricity from renewable sources both as a product being supplied to the grid and as a product being consumed by end users. Because electricity itself cannot be physically tracked once it enters the grid, the standard uses tradeable green certificates to establish a credible, auditable link between renewable generation and consumption claims.
The certification relies on a rigorous auditing and verification process designed to prevent double selling and double counting — common integrity risks in renewable energy certificate markets. Each unit of renewable electricity is accounted for only once, giving buyers confidence that their green electricity claims are exclusive and legitimate. The standard may also incorporate lifecycle assessment (LCA) data on carbon emissions and additional sustainability information about the electricity source, allowing for more comprehensive environmental disclosures.
This standard is relevant for energy suppliers, corporate energy buyers, and other organizations in the European energy sector that want to make credible, verified claims about the renewable origin of their electricity. It provides a structured quality assurance layer on top of the broader Guarantees of Origin (GO) market, helping participants meet sustainability reporting obligations and stakeholder expectations with independently verified documentation.
