Stemilt Responsible Choice

The Stemilt Responsible Choice program is a proprietary certification run by Stemilt Growers, Inc. that applies to fruit grown and handled under the company's integrated pest management (IPM) standards. The label appears on Stemilt fruit products and signals that the orchards and packing facilities behind them meet the company's internal benchmarks for environmental stewardship, including water conservation, reduced agricultural inputs, and responsible land management practices.

On the environmental side, the program covers a range of initiatives: protecting local waterways and salmon habitats by managing orchard runoff, composting fruit waste to feed back into farmland, diverting non-sellable fruit to cattle feedlots, and powering Washington packing operations with 100% renewable electricity through hydropower and solar. The program also tracks energy efficiency improvements, such as electrifying the forklift fleet and expanding on-site solar capacity at packing facilities.

The Responsible Choice label also encompasses Stemilt's social responsibility commitments, including fair treatment of workers, employee health benefits, paid holidays, and safe working conditions, as well as the company's involvement in local community organizations and charitable causes. Because this is a self-administered program rather than a third-party certification, buyers and retailers should evaluate it as a brand-level sustainability commitment rather than an independently verified standard.
