Sustainable Agricultural Network

The Sustainable Agricultural Network (SAN) certification program awards the Rainforest Alliance Certified eco-label to farms that meet rigorous environmental and social standards. Certification applies at the farm level — not to companies or individual products — and covers a wide range of agricultural commodities including coffee, bananas, cocoa, oranges, pineapples, flowers, and ferns, as well as associated crops such as macadamia nuts, passion fruit, and plantains. Individual farmers can apply to certify their own land, and companies can also request that their network of source farms pursue certification.

To earn the certification, farms must demonstrate responsible land management practices such as reducing pesticide use, protecting biodiversity, improving soil health, and addressing climate change. The program also sets requirements for the fair treatment of farm workers. Together, these criteria are designed to ensure that certified farms operate in ways that are better for both the natural environment and the people who work on them.

The program is globally recognized and active across more than 50 countries spanning Latin America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. It is particularly relevant for farms and agricultural businesses that want to demonstrate sustainability credentials to buyers, retailers, or consumers who look for the Rainforest Alliance's distinctive green frog seal on products.
