Overview
The Timberland Green Index is an environmental scoring system that Timberland developed to measure and disclose the ecological footprint of its own products. Each product is rated on a scale of 0 to 10, where a lower score indicates a smaller environmental impact. The index was designed to give consumers transparent, product-level information at the point of purchase so they can factor environmental performance into their buying decisions.
Scores are calculated across three impact categories: climate impact, which measures greenhouse gas emissions generated during production; chemicals used, which assesses the presence of hazardous substances such as PVC and solvent-based adhesives; and resource consumption, which reflects the percentage of recycled, organic, and renewable materials used by weight in the finished product.
Because the Green Index is a proprietary Timberland program rather than a third-party certification, it applies exclusively to Timberland's own product line. It is most relevant to consumers and sustainability researchers who want to understand how Timberland products compare to one another environmentally, rather than to manufacturers seeking an independent certification for their own goods.
