UTZ Certification

UTZ Certification, now integrated with the Rainforest Alliance, was originally founded in 2002 to promote sustainable coffee farming, later expanding to include cocoa, tea, and hazelnuts. The certification aims to improve agricultural practices, safeguard the environment, and create better livelihoods for farmers. It focuses on responsible farming methods, addressing issues like climate change, child labor, and poor working conditions. Products with the UTZ label signify compliance with strict sustainability criteria, which are audited by independent certification bodies to ensure transparency and trustworthiness.

The UTZ program helped farmers produce higher quality crops while promoting environmental conservation. It enabled producers to optimize farm management, improve working conditions, and protect the planet’s resources. With a focus on continuous improvement, the UTZ label became a trusted mark for consumers looking for responsibly sourced products. In 2018, UTZ merged with the Rainforest Alliance to unify their strengths and expand their global reach in promoting sustainable agriculture. The merger created a combined certification program that incorporates the best practices from both organizations. Since 2020, the UTZ certification has been gradually phased out, and new products now carry the Rainforest Alliance seal, symbolizing responsible sourcing and sustainable practices.

While the UTZ label is being replaced, the mission remains the same: to build a future where people and nature thrive together through sustainable farming, environmental protection, and economic empowerment for farmers.
